Description

A flutter of butterflies outside Mammoth Cave.

When we went thither, it must have been butterfly season, because there were butterflies everywhere. And a group of them all clumped together at one point while we were waiting around. They were fascinating -- I'm not sure what they were doing, though. Maybe having a meeting about how it's a bad idea to sun their wings on the road, where they'll get run over?

Looking through some identification websites, I think that these (or at least the black ones) are Spicebush swallowtails (Papilo troilus)

Cool shot!:D I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but these look like Eastern Tiger Swallowtails (Papilio glaucus) to me. Females of the species come in 2 forms, a light form (yellow with black stripes like the male) and a dark form, which these dark butterflies could be. Or it could be a mix of species.

Sometimes, tigers are seen "puddling"--congregating at a water or mud puddle to drink. Or they are plotting to take over the park. Whatever they are doing, it makes a great shot.:)
